Skill Tree Discussion

So I thought it would be interesting to start a discussion on what kind of skill areas we would expect to see. Here's what I envision.

Firearms
Pistols
Rifles
Specialization in one specific type (Winchester breach-loading rifle, Colt .45, etc)

Native Ranged Weapons
Bows
Javelin

Melee Weapons
Knives
Hatchet/Axe
Lariat

Animal Husbandry
Riding
Training
Herding

Hunting
Tracking
Trapping
Tanning/Resource Harvesting (converting animal to craftable resources)

Homestead
Farming
Ranching (Breeding)

Domestic
Cooking
Sewing (Tailor)
Literacy
Music

Artisan
Gunsmith
Metalsmith (Knives, Shoehorns, etc)

Diplomacy
Bartering
Languages
Negotiating (Treatys, Land Disputes)

Harvesting
Mining
Lumberjack

Saloon Life
Gambling
Alcohol Tolerance
Dancing

Anyway, those are the ones that I can quickly come up with.

We have the beginnings of publically available information concerning professions, skills, and abilities in our Wiki at http://phoenixmmo.com/wiki/

As we finalize developer-documents and make decisions on game mechanics, we'll post more into to the Wiki as well as our main site. Much of what you've come up with is currently being discussed.

One of the main professions in Phoenix will be animal husbandry. Players will be able to tame wild animals (horses expecially) and then breed them to produce offspring based on the abilities and characteristics of its parents. We see this profession to be a major component to Phoenix's economy.

The wiki is password protected now. Is there a guest PW?

The public wiki was taken offline as most of the information is severely outdated. We'll bring it back online after we're done reorganizing.

I guess I need to take a look at that.

Hrm.

It's still there, as is all the content we've added since closing it down.

Have you thought of adding Leadership to the skill tree? Would be useful for the Ranch boss / Sheriff / Army Fort Officer etc.... maybe have it effect how many NPC's they could command.

Also expanded Hunting to include Scouting for the Indian's vs settlers, the Indian Scouts working for the Army or the Scout working for a bounty hunter / Sheriff vs the gang of desperadoes.

We've had a couple questions about a Sheriff-type role or other "leadership" class. To be honest, I'm not sure how such a thing would fit into the game.

That said, individual Gangs would have their own leaders, and these positions could certainly be filled by players.

Not sure how you would get there, certain quests maybe? But I saw it as having to do with how many NPC's you could control.

At the lowest level it would be 1. Your side kick if you will and as you go up in your "leadership skill" you'd be able to handle more. An example would be a low leader trying to get a posse up. #1 wouldn't be able to get anyone to help, a #5 would be able to recruit 5 NPC's etc... or in your example of a outlaw gang, no one's going to want to follow a poor leader....etc...

Almost any of the "professions" could make use of the skill. A Ranch boss or trail boss would be able to get more wranglers if he knew what he was doing and a saloon keeper could increase the size of his establishment if he could hire more barkeeps, saloon girls.

OK, now I see where where you're going here. Very good idea!

The idea of "henchmen" or "deputies" has come up a time or two, as well as "hired help" for animal husbandry and farming. It could definitely tie in there.

Also, since we're skill based, you could try to "hire" more people on to help you, but if you hire more than you can handle maybe some randomization of bad things happen ;)

Dont forget the "Conductor" too for the Train Locomotives.........etc.

I see it as either have All NPC's as the top LEADERSHIP roles or it may get unfair to all the users who want to be leaders when this game gets very big OR.........

make it so you can only obtain one of the few leadership roles, aka like Town Sheriff(note there should be several towns or more) once you max out your character (or LEVEL, like a level cap).
